Relationships – God 1st

To those of you who know who you are in Christ and have made relationship with God your #1 priority, congratulations. By the grace of God, you are a mature disciple of Christ and an ambassador of His kingdom. Desiring to do life with another, the way God intended from the beginning, is very good. May He bless you with the right person at the right time.

This word of encouragement is specifically for those who have been caught up in the idea that you need someone else to complete you – that your connection to another individual will fill the void in your soul. Beloved, this is a lie.

Consider this text.

Isaiah 56:3b-5 “…don’t let the eunuchs say, ‘I’m a dried-up tree with no children and no future.’ For this is what the Lord says: I will bless those eunuchs who keep My Sabbath days holy and who choose to do what pleases Me and commit their lives to Me. I will give them—within the walls of My house—a memorial and a name far greater than sons and daughters could give. For the name I give them is an everlasting one. It will never disappear!”

Now, for the sake of relevance, we will not cover what happened to the historic eunuch for him to be identified as such, although I will clarify that the eunuch was stripped of his ability to pro-create, so you do the math…  Our focus here will be on the singleness of such a person.

Notice God’s regard for what the eunuch lost, is backed up with a promise that supersedes the benefit of normalcy one would of otherwise had: a wife, kids and the extension of family (thus the continuation of one’s bloodline). The conditions of His promise being fulfilled are wrapped up in a pure and noble purpose: living in a continual state of worship and reverence towards their Creator. In other words, putting God 1st.

In 1 Corinthians 7 Paul says “…let me say this, dear brothers and sisters: The time that remains is very short… For this world as we know it will soon pass away.”

Paul emphasizes the importance of obtaining and maintaining an eternal perspective. He goes on to express in verses 32-35:

32 I want you to be free from the concerns of this life. An unmarried man can spend his time doing the Lord’s work and thinking how to please him. 33 But a married man has to think about his earthly responsibilities and how to please his wife. 34 His interests are divided. In the same way, a woman who is no longer married or has never been married can be devoted to the Lord and holy in body and in spirit. But a married woman has to think about her earthly responsibilities and how to please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible.

In Luke 20:34-38, Jesus says to some critical Sadducees regarding the resurrection, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.”

Each man mentioned in Moses’ decreed observation was indeed married; however, that is no longer the case. Marriage is but a shadow signifying what our union with Christ will be when the time has come. Those patriarchs are well aware of that now.

For those who are severely bent on getting married, restoring a destroyed union with a former spouse, or repairing a broken relationship, you may despise this exhortation. Please understand what’s being suggested is not that you discard the desire. Proverbs 18:22 says, “He who finds a wife has found a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord”. Only lessen the severity of that bend and reverse its lean toward God.

These are Jesus’ Words:

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

The spiritual principle in this text is like an addendum to God’s words through the prophet Isaiah in our opening scripture.

No human being was ever meant to piece another person’s puzzle together. Only Jesus. The presence of God is the true and sole source of joy. Pleasing Him is our purpose.

Ps 16:11 You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

So then, delight yourself in (that is, learn of, take pleasure in, and worship – which can also mean serve) the living God, and He will cause the desires of your heart to mirror His own.

Your desires can be made perfect in Christ, who is our perfect, holy, eternal Savior, God and King.

Pray: There is no one like You Lord. May You convince those on the fence about You of Your righteousness. May You reveal Yourself to the despondent and broken hearted. May any person who can relate to what they’ve read here discover the joy that’s found in their allegiance to You, and may You be enthroned upon the renewed praises of the people You’ve called unto Yourself, whether single or in blessed partnership, for You are worthy of all things being utterly devoted to You.

Let us not forget Your instructions:

To seek first the kingdom of God and Your righteousness… For there is nothing better than knowing You. May our overwhelming want be to hear one day, “Well done good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of Your Lord”.

Always in Jesus,

Amen.
